About our motor repair service

When the opener stops, the whole house stops.

Motors don’t fail politely. They hum, they stutter, or they go completely silent at 7am on a Monday when the car is inside and you need to leave. The good news is that most openers can be repaired. A stripped gear, a tired capacitor, a logic board fault or a sensor out of line are all common, affordable fixes.

We repair every major brand on site: B&D, Merlin, Chamberlain, ATA, Steel-Line, DoorWorks and Gliderol. That covers gear replacement, capacitors, logic boards, travel limit resets, sensor realignment and remote programming. Our vans carry the common parts, so the right part usually comes with us on the first visit.

A motor problem is not always a motor problem. A broken spring or a door that has fallen out of balance makes the opener strain against far more weight than it was built to lift. That is why every job starts with the door itself, not just the box on the ceiling. If the door is the real fault, we tell you before we touch the motor.

“Stocked van. Real diagnosis. A fixed price before any tool comes out.”

// FIG. 1 — INSIDE YOUR GARAGE DOOR OPENER

Six parts. One working opener.

An opener is more than a motor. These six parts work together every time you press the remote, and any one of them can stop the door.

1Motor & capacitorThe electric motor and its start capacitor. A failing capacitor makes the motor hum without turning.
3Logic boardThe opener’s brain. Reads the remote, the limits and the sensors and tells the motor what to do.
5Rail, chain & carriageThe chain or belt pulls the carriage along the rail, and the arm moves the door.
2Drive gearTurns the motor’s speed into lifting force. The plastic main gear is the part that strips most often.
4Travel limitsTell the opener where fully open and fully closed are. When they drift, the door stops short or reverses.
6Safety sensorsAn infrared beam across the opening. Break it and the door stops and reverses back up.
Why Gold for motor work

Anyone can swap a motor. We fix the cause.

A new opener on a door that is out of balance will fail again. These are the standards we hold on every motor job.

01 · DOOR FIRSTWe check the door, not just the motorSprings, cables, rollers and balance are checked first. If the door is the real problem, we tell you before replacing anything on the ceiling.
02 · REPAIR FIRSTRepair before replaceMost openers can be fixed with a gear, a capacitor, a board or a sensor. Replacement is the last option, not the default, and we explain why if we recommend it.
03 · SAFETYSensors and auto-reverse testedEvery job ends with a safety test. We check the sensor beam and set the force so the door reverses if it meets an obstruction.
04 · SETTINGSLimits and force set properlyTravel limits and force settings are adjusted to your door so it stops in the right place and the motor isn’t overworked.
05 · NO SURPRISESWritten fixed-price quoteYou get the full price in writing before work starts. No hourly creep and no extras added on the day without your OK.
06 · WARRANTY1-Year Labour WarrantyEvery motor repair carries our 1-Year Labour Warranty, plus the manufacturer’s warranty on parts.
Motor diagnostic guide

What is your opener actually doing?

Match the symptoms below, then call us. Describe the sound and what the door does, and a technician will often pinpoint the fault on the phone before we come out.

01

Motor hums, door won’t move

Power is reaching the motor but nothing moves. Usually a broken spring putting the full door weight on the opener, a stripped main gear, or a failed start capacitor.

URGENT
02

Completely dead

No sound and no light when you press the remote or the wall button. A tripped circuit, a blown fuse, a burnt logic board or an opener at the end of its life. Diagnosis tells us which.

COMMON
03

Door reverses mid-travel

The door starts to close, then opens again. Safety sensors blocked or out of line, force settings wrong, or a door that binds and drags on the tracks.

COMMON
04

Grinding or clicking, no lift

The motor runs but the door doesn’t. The plastic main gear has worn or stripped, which is very common after eight to ten years of daily use.

COMMON
05

Sensor light stuck red

One or both safety sensors flash and the door refuses to close. Usually a bumped sensor, a dirty lens or a damaged wire. Never bypass the sensors.

URGENT
06

Stops halfway

The door stops partway up or down. Travel limits have drifted, the door is out of balance, or the tracks are binding.

MODERATE
07

Slow or weak movement

The opener sounds tired and the door creeps. A fading capacitor, worn motor parts or an unbalanced door adding extra weight.

MINOR
08

Remote or keypad not working

Flat battery, lost programming, interference or a faulty receiver in the head unit. Often a quick re-pair or a new remote.

MINOR
How it works

From your call to a working opener, most jobs the same day.

Every motor repair follows the same four steps: diagnosis on the phone, a check of the whole door, a written fixed price, then the repair and a full test.

01

Phone diagnosis

A real technician picks up, not a call centre. Tell us the brand, the sound and what the door does. Send a photo of the motor on WhatsApp if you’re not sure of the model.

02

Van on the way

Our vans carry gears, capacitors, logic boards, sensors and remotes for the common brands, so the right parts usually come with us.

03

Test, diagnose, quote

We test the motor, the logic board, the sensors, the remotes and the door’s balance, then give you a written fixed price for repair or replacement.

04

Repaired and tested

The repair is done, the limits and force are set, and the door is cycled several times with the sensors tested. Backed by a 1-Year Labour Warranty.

Every opener type. Every brand.

The four opener types we repair.

OPENER 01Chain drive

The workhorse on many Sydney sectional and tilt doors. Strong and reliable, a little louder. Chain tension and gear wear are the usual issues.

OPENER 02Belt drive

A reinforced belt in place of the chain, so it runs much quieter. Popular under bedrooms. Belt wear and slipping are the usual issues.

OPENER 03Roller door opener

Mounts beside the drum on the roller door axle. Common faults are the logic board, limits and the release mechanism.

OPENER 04Smart / Wi-Fi opener

Openers you control from an app, with alerts when the door is left open. We repair, set up and connect them.

Motor & Opener Repair FAQ

The motor questions we hear most often.

Question not listed? Tell us your door brand and what you heard or saw. Call 0485 000 933.

How do I know if my opener needs a repair or a full replacement?

Most openers can be repaired. A stripped gear, a failed capacitor or a burnt logic board are all common and affordable fixes. We only recommend replacement when the unit is genuinely at the end of its life (often around 12 years or more), when parts are no longer made, or when the repair would cost more than about 60% of a new opener. You get our recommendation in writing.

How much does garage door motor repair cost?

Most motor repairs are $180–$350. The price depends on the motor, the fault and access, and can change with the job and the working conditions on site. You always get a written fixed price before any work starts.

Do you service my motor brand?

Very likely. We repair the brands most common in Sydney homes, including B&D, Merlin, Chamberlain, ATA, Steel-Line, DoorWorks and Gliderol. Our vans carry common gears, capacitors, boards, sensors and remotes. Not sure what you have? Send a photo of the motor on WhatsApp.

My opener is getting old. Is it still worth repairing?

Often, yes. Plenty of older units are still fully repairable with the right parts. Others are past their useful life. We will tell you honestly on site which one you have, and give you a written price for both options if it is close.

Why is my motor humming but the door won’t lift?

There are three usual causes: a broken spring putting the whole door’s weight on the motor, a stripped main gear inside the opener, or a failed start capacitor. A broken spring is the most common and the most urgent. Never try to force the door open if you suspect a broken spring.

Why does my door reverse before it closes?

Usually the safety sensors. One may be bumped out of line, the lens may be dirty, or something may be in the beam. It can also be the force setting or a door that binds on the tracks. Do not bypass the sensors. We realign or replace them and reset the force.

Can you reprogram remotes, keypads and sensors on site?

Yes. We carry universal and brand-matched remotes and can reprogram, re-pair or replace handheld remotes, wall keypads and safety sensors on the same visit, then test everything from the driveway.

Can you install or set up a smart Wi-Fi opener?

Yes. We install and set up app-controlled openers from brands like Merlin, Chamberlain and ATA, and smart add-ons that work with many older openers. We connect the app and show you how it works before we leave.

Are your motor repairs covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every motor repair comes with our 1-Year Labour Warranty in writing. Replacement parts are also covered by their manufacturer’s warranty.
