A standard single-skin door is one thin layer of steel. On a hot afternoon it soaks up the sun and passes the heat straight into the garage. It also carries road noise and rattles in the wind. If there is a bedroom or living area above the garage, it is often the warmest, loudest room in the house.
An insulated door is built differently: two steel skins bonded around an insulated core, with sealed edges and weather seals all round. The result is a garage that stays noticeably cooler in summer and warmer in winter, a quieter door, and stiffer panels that resist everyday dents.

A bedroom, study or living area over the garage that heats up every afternoon. The door is usually the main source of that heat.

How much more does an insulated door cost than a single-skin?
An insulated door costs more than an equivalent single-skin door. The final price depends on the size, brand, finish, whether your opener suits the heavier door and any work needed around the opening. We measure on site and give you one written fixed price, so there is no online estimate to second-guess.
Will my existing garage motor work with an insulated door?
Often yes, but not always. Insulated doors are heavier than single-skin doors. Many newer openers handle the extra weight well, while older or lighter openers can struggle. We check your motor during the measure and tell you honestly whether it can stay.
Can I add insulation to my existing single-skin door?
Foam-board kits exist that stick to the inside of the door, but they don’t seal the edges, do little for noise and can upset the spring balance. For real comfort, a proper insulated panel door is the way to go. We don’t install foam-board kits.
How long does the installation take?
Once the door has been made to your sizes, most installs are completed in a single visit. That covers removing the old door, fitting the tracks and the new door, setting the springs, connecting the opener and a full open-and-close test.
Are insulated doors worth it if I don’t have a room above the garage?
For many Sydney homes, yes. You still get a cooler garage in summer for storage, a gym or a workshop, a quieter door for early starts and late finishes, and stiffer panels that resist dings. If the garage is only used to park the car and faces away from the sun, a single-skin door may be enough, and we will tell you so.
What do R-value, U-value and STC mean?
R-value measures resistance to heat flow, so higher is better. U-value measures how much heat passes through, so lower is better. STC is a rating for how well a panel blocks sound, and higher is better. Ratings vary by brand and door type, so we confirm the figures for the exact door at quote.
Is an insulated roller door as effective as a sectional?
Generally not quite, because roller door slats are thinner than sectional panels. But in low-headroom garages where a sectional won’t fit, an insulated roller is still a real improvement on a standard roller door. Where space allows, a sectional is usually the better choice for comfort.
What warranty comes with the door and the install?
Two layers. The manufacturer’s warranty covers the door itself, such as the panels and finish, and its length depends on the brand and range. On top of that, we give our 1-Year Labour Warranty on the installation work.
