About our cable repair

Cables are the quiet part holding your door up.

Most people never think about their garage door cables until one lets go. They run from the drums on the shaft above the door down to the bottom corners, and every time the door moves they carry its full weight while the spring does the lifting. When a cable snaps, the door loses its balance on one side and can drop or twist in the tracks.

That is why a broken cable is one of the most dangerous garage door faults. Never try to lift the door by hand and never let the opener keep trying. Leave it where it is, keep people and cars clear, and call us. We will talk you through keeping it safe until a technician is there.

Cables wear together, so we always replace them as a pair. We match the new cable to your door’s original length, thickness and end fittings, check the drums and springs that caused or felt the failure, and re-balance the door before we leave. Rust, fraying and a cable sitting loose on the drum are all signs it is close to the end.

“Both cables. Right spec. Balanced before we leave.”

// FIG. 1 — THE CABLE PATH

From the drum to the floor. Where cables fail.

Your lift cables are one part of a tensioned system. Here is the path a cable takes, and the parts we check when one snaps or frays.

1Torsion shaft & springThe spring winds the shaft. The shaft turns both drums together so the door lifts level.
3Lift cablesGalvanised steel cables carry the door’s weight from the drums to the bottom corners.
5Snap pointCables usually fray or rust near the bottom bracket or where they leave the drum.
2Cable drumsGrooved drums at each end wind the cable on and off. A worn groove lets the cable slip.
4Bottom bracketsAnchor each cable to the door under full spring tension. Never a DIY job.
6Tracks & rollersGuide the door. With one cable gone, the door twists and jams in the tracks.
Why Gold for cable work

Cable work under tension is serious work.

Cables sit under the full load of the springs. These are the standards we hold on every cable job, big or small.

01 · SAFETY FIRSTTension released before we startWe lock the door off and release the spring tension in a controlled way before any cable comes off. No shortcuts on a part that can whip or drop the door.
02 · PAIRSAlways both cablesIf one cable has snapped, the other has done the same work and taken a shock in the failure. Replacing only one means uneven tension and a second visit.
03 · RIGHT SPECMatched to your doorEvery cable is matched to the original length, thickness and end fittings for your door. No generic hardware-store cable.
04 · INSPECTIONDrums and springs checkedA worn drum or tired spring will ruin a new cable. We check both on every job and quote any extra work before touching it.
05 · NO SURPRISESWritten fixed-price quoteYou get the full price in writing before work starts. Nothing added on the day without your OK.
06 · WARRANTY1-Year Labour WarrantyEvery cable repair carries our 1-Year Labour Warranty, plus the manufacturer’s warranty on the new parts.
Cable diagnostic guide

How do you know it’s the cable?

Match what you see below, then call us. If the door is hanging crooked or stuck half open, do not touch it. We will tell you how to keep it safe until we arrive.

01

Cable snapped completely

A cable is hanging loose or lying on the floor. Usually rust, fatigue or a spring problem that overloaded it. The door is no longer balanced.

URGENT
02

Door sits crooked

One side of the door is lower than the other. One cable has snapped, stretched or slipped off its drum, so the tension is uneven.

URGENT
03

Loud bang, then a jammed door

A cable has let go under load and the door has dropped or twisted in the tracks. Leave it where it is and keep the opener off.

URGENT
04

Cable off the drum

The cable has unwound or jumped out of the drum grooves. Often caused by a broken spring, a worn drum or a cable set to the wrong length.

URGENT
05

Visible fraying or rust

Broken strands, a fuzzy look or rust near the bottom bracket. The cable is close to failing. Replace it before it snaps.

MODERATE
06

Grinding or scraping

The cable is wrapping badly on the drum or rubbing on the track. Left alone, it wears through and can snap.

MODERATE
07

Slack cable when closed

A cable that hangs loose when the door is down can jump off the drum next time the door opens. It needs re-tensioning.

COMMON
08

Door jerks or strains the opener

Uneven cable tension makes the door judder and the motor work harder. An early sign worth a check.

MINOR
How it works

From a snapped cable to a balanced door, usually the same day.

Every cable job follows the same four steps: advice on the phone, a safe lock-off and inspection, a paired replacement and a full balance test.

01

Call us first

A real technician picks up. Tell us what you heard and what the door is doing, and we will tell you how to keep it safe. Do not lift the door in the meantime.

02

Door secured & inspected

We lock the door off, release the spring tension safely and inspect both cables, the drums, the springs and the bottom brackets. You get a written fixed price.

03

Both cables replaced

New galvanised cables matched to your door’s spec, wound correctly onto the drums and tensioned evenly on both sides.

04

Tested & balanced

We run the door through its full travel, check it sits level and holds its position, and walk you through the work. Backed by a 1-Year Labour Warranty.

Every cable job. Every door.

The four cable jobs we do most.

JOB 01Snapped cable

Both lift cables replaced as a pair, wound onto the drums and tensioned evenly so the door lifts level again.

JOB 02Frayed or rusted

Caught early, before it snaps. We swap both cables and check why they wore, from damp to a rough drum.

JOB 03Off the drum

Cable re-wound onto the drum grooves, with the drum, spring and cable length checked so it does not slip again.

JOB 04Safety cables

Fitted through extension springs on tilt and older doors, so a spring that breaks is held in place.

Cable Repair FAQ

The cable questions we hear most often.

Question not listed? Tell us your door brand and what you heard or saw. Call 0485 000 933.

How much does garage door cable repair cost in Sydney?

Cable repairs start from $150. The final price depends on access, the door and whether the drums or springs were damaged when the cable failed, and can change with the job and the working conditions on site. You always get a written fixed price before any work starts.

Why do you replace both cables, not just the broken one?

Cables wear together. If one has snapped, the other has done the same work for the same years and took a shock when its partner failed. Replacing just one leaves uneven tension, which wears the drums and strains the spring, and usually means a second visit. A matched pair keeps the door balanced.

Is it safe to use my garage door with a snapped cable?

No. With a cable gone, the door is no longer balanced on that side. Forcing it open or running the opener can make it drop suddenly or jam hard in the tracks. Leave it where it is, keep people and cars clear, and call us. We will secure it and lift it safely with the right tools.

Can I replace garage door cables myself?

We strongly advise against it. Cable work means releasing spring tension first, and torsion springs hold a lot of stored energy. The cables themselves are under load and can whip when they come free. The saving is not worth the risk of injury or a damaged car.

My cable came off the drum. Can it just be put back on?

Sometimes, but there is always a reason it came off: a broken or weak spring, a worn drum groove, a cable set to the wrong length, or the door hitting something on the way down. We find the cause, fix it and then re-wind the cable, so it does not slip off again.

How long does a cable replacement take?

Most cable jobs are finished in a single visit, often the same day you call, because we carry common cables and fittings in the van. If the spring or drums also need replacing, we quote that on the spot and can usually do it in the same visit.

How long should garage door cables last?

It depends on how often the door is used, the weight of the door and the conditions in your garage. Damp garages and coastal air rust cables faster, and a rough drum wears them out early. If your cables look rusty or fuzzy, or you have never had them checked, it is worth a look before they snap.

Do you work on all garage door brands?

Yes. We replace cables on B&D, Steel-Line, Gliderol, Centurion, DoorWorks and other common doors across Sydney. If you are not sure what you have, send a photo of the door on WhatsApp and we will identify it.

What warranty do you give on cable repairs?

Every cable repair carries our 1-Year Labour Warranty, plus the manufacturer’s warranty on the new parts.
