About our spring replacement

Garage door springs don’t fade. They break.

Springs work fine until they don’t. One loud bang from the garage, then silence, and a door that suddenly feels many times heavier than it did five minutes ago. The spring was doing almost all of the lifting, and now the opener and cables are carrying the full weight.

Springs aren’t repaired, they’re replaced. The steel is under enormous load, and once it fractures that spring is finished. We carry common spring sizes for B&D, Steel-Line, Gliderol, Merlin, ATA and DoorWorks doors on the van, and we replace them as a matched pair so both sides lift evenly.

A typical spring is rated for around 10,000 open-and-close cycles, which for an average household is roughly seven to ten years. Use the garage as your main entry and they wear out sooner. Rust, stretched coils or a squeal when the door moves are all signs the end is close.

// FIG. 1 — WHAT HOLDS YOUR DOOR UP

Six parts. One balanced system.

Your springs do the heavy lifting, but they work with five other parts. When a spring breaks, these are the parts we check.

1Torsion springsWound to your door’s weight. They do almost all of the lifting.
3Lift cablesCarry the load from the drums to the bottom of the door.
5Bottom bracketsHold the cables under full spring tension. Never a DIY job.
2Cable drumsTurn with the shaft and wind the lift cables up and down.
4Tracks & rollersGuide the door as it moves. Worn rollers make it noisy.
6OpenerGuides the door open and closed. It should never lift the door’s full weight.
Why Gold for spring work

Anyone can swap a spring. Few do it right.

Cheap installs cut corners that show up a year or two later. These are the standards we hold on every spring job.

01 · BEST PRACTICEAlways replaced as a matched pairIf one spring failed at around 10,000 cycles, its partner is close behind. Replacing only one means the other often goes within months. On a dual-spring door we replace both.
02 · RIGHT SIZESprings sized to your doorWe measure the wire, diameter and length of your springs and match the replacements to your door’s weight, so it lifts evenly and the opener isn’t strained.
03 · BALANCEBalance tested through its travelAfter the install we check the door holds its position at several heights. If it drifts, we adjust the tension before we leave.
04 · INSPECTIONCables and drums checkedWhen a spring snaps, the cables can jump off the drums and the drums can be damaged. We inspect both on every job and quote any extra work before touching it.
05 · NO SURPRISESWritten fixed-price quoteYou get the full price in writing before work starts. No extras added on the day without your OK.
06 · WARRANTY1-Year Labour WarrantyEvery spring replacement carries our 1-Year Labour Warranty, plus the manufacturer’s warranty on the springs themselves.
Spring diagnostic guide

How do you know it’s the spring?

Match the symptoms below, then call us. A technician will talk it through with you and bring matched-pair replacements for your door.

01

Snapped torsion spring

Loud bang from the garage and the door won’t lift. The spring above the door has fractured and released its tension in an instant.

URGENT
02

Broken extension spring

One or both side-mounted springs have snapped. Common on older Sydney homes with tilt or basic sectional doors. Always replaced in pairs.

URGENT
03

Door suddenly too heavy

The door feels far heavier overnight. A spring has lost tension or fractured internally, even if it looks intact. Never force it open by hand.

URGENT
04

Visible gap in the coil

You can see a gap of an inch or two in the spring where the coil should be tight. The spring is finished. Don’t operate the door.

URGENT
05

Loud bang, then silence

The classic moment of spring failure, often mistaken for a gunshot. Even if the door looks fine, the spring is broken and the door is now dangerous.

URGENT
06

One side drops or tilts

The door rises unevenly. Common on dual-spring doors when one spring has fatigued faster than its partner. Both need replacing as a pair.

COMMON
07

Squealing or grinding

Metallic squealing or grinding as the door moves. The springs are ageing under friction and stress. A good time to plan replacement before they snap.

MODERATE
08

Rust or stretched coils

Springs that look rusty, stretched or visibly aged are usually near the end of their life. Planned replacement is safer than an emergency.

MINOR
How it works

From the bang to a working door, usually the same day.

Every spring replacement follows the same four steps: diagnosis on the phone, a fixed-price quote on site, a matched-pair install and a full balance test.

01

Phone diagnosis

A real technician picks up, not a call centre. Tell us what you heard and what the door is doing, and we’ll tell you how to keep it safe until we arrive.

02

Van on the way

Our vans carry common torsion and extension spring sizes, plus cables, drums and bearings, so the right parts come with us.

03

Measure, inspect, quote

We measure your springs, check the cables and drums for damage from the failure, and give you a written fixed price before any tool comes out.

04

Replaced and tested

Springs fitted as a matched pair, the door balanced and cycled until it runs smoothly, backed by a 1-Year Labour Warranty.

Spring Replacement FAQ

The spring questions we hear most often.

Question not listed? Tell us your door brand and what you heard or saw. Call 0485 000 933.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

We strongly advise against it. Torsion and extension springs hold enormous stored energy, and a spring that lets go can cause serious injury. Professionals use proper winding bars, safety cables and controlled procedures. The savings are not worth the risk.

Should I replace one spring or both?

Both, on a dual-spring door. If one spring has failed, the other has done the same number of cycles and is likely to fail soon. Replacing them as a matched pair costs a little more upfront but saves a second visit and keeps the door balanced.

How long do garage door springs last?

A standard spring is rated for around 10,000 cycles, which is roughly seven to ten years for an average household. If you use the garage as your main entry and open the door many times a day, expect less. Higher-cycle springs are available for heavy use; ask us when we quote.

What is the difference between torsion and extension springs?

Torsion springs sit horizontally above the door and twist to store energy. They are used on most modern sectional doors. Extension springs run along the side tracks and stretch as the door closes. They are common on tilt and older doors and need safety cables in case they break. We service both.

My door is too heavy to lift after a snap. Should I force it?

No. Once a spring breaks, the door’s counterbalance is gone and its full weight sits on the opener, cables and tracks. Forcing it can damage those parts and the door can drop suddenly. Leave it where it is and call us; we will guide you on the phone.

How much does garage door spring replacement cost?

Most spring replacements are $250–$450. The price depends on access and the spring size, and can change with the job and the working conditions on site. You always get a written fixed price before any work starts.

How quickly can you come out for a broken spring?

We treat snapped springs as a priority and most are replaced the same day across Sydney metro. Call 0485 000 933 and we will give you the fastest available time.

Is spring replacement guaranteed?

Yes. Every spring replacement carries our 1-Year Labour Warranty, plus the manufacturer’s warranty on the springs themselves.
