Emergency Garage Door Repair — What to Do When You’re Locked Out

It’s 7am, you’re running late, and your garage door won’t open. Your car is trapped inside. Or worse — it’s late at night, the door is stuck halfway, and your garage is wide open to the street.

A garage door emergency is stressful because it affects your security, your routine, and your ability to get on with your day. Here’s exactly what to do — and what to avoid — when your garage door fails at the worst possible time.

Step 1: Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

Before touching anything, take a moment to observe. Is the door partially open, fully closed, or hanging at an angle? Are any cables visibly snapped or hanging loose? Is the motor making a sound but the door not moving?

These details help our technicians prepare the right parts before arriving, which means a faster fix.

Step 2: Do NOT Force the Door

This is the most important rule. If your door is jammed, off its tracks, or has a broken spring — forcing it open (manually or with the motor) can cause serious injury or turn a simple repair into an expensive one.

Specifically, avoid repeatedly pressing the remote when the motor is straining, pulling the door up by hand if it feels unusually heavy (this suggests broken springs), trying to re-thread a snapped cable yourself, and using tools to pry the door open from outside.

A garage door under tension stores enormous energy. Spring and cable repairs should only be handled by a qualified technician.

Step 3: Use the Manual Release (If Safe)

If the motor has failed but the springs and cables are intact, you can usually open the door manually using the emergency release cord. This is the red cord (sometimes with a red handle) hanging from the opener rail inside your garage.

Pull the cord firmly downward to disconnect the door from the motor. Then lift the door by hand from the bottom. A properly balanced door should lift smoothly. If it feels extremely heavy or won’t stay open — stop. The springs may be failing and manual operation isn’t safe.

Step 4: Secure Your Property

If the door is stuck open and you can’t close it, don’t leave your garage unattended. Move valuables out of sight if possible, and let a neighbour know the situation if you need to leave.

Step 5: Call for Emergency Repair

Contact a garage door specialist — not a general handyman. Garage door systems involve high-tension springs, heavy panels, and electrical components that require specific tools and training.

Common Emergency Scenarios

Broken spring: The most common emergency call we receive. The door will be extremely heavy and the motor can’t lift it. We carry springs for all major brands and replace them same-day.

Snapped cable: Cables connect the springs to the door. When one breaks, the door drops on one side and jams in the tracks. This is a cable repair — usually 30–60 minutes on site.

Motor failure: The motor hums but the door doesn’t move, or nothing happens at all. Could be a stripped gear, burned capacitor, or logic board fault. Our motor repair technicians diagnose and repair all brands.

Door off tracks: Usually caused by an impact (reversing into the door) or worn rollers. The door needs to be carefully re-aligned.

Power outage: If the power is out, use the manual release cord to operate the door by hand until power returns. The motor will re-engage automatically when you next use the remote after power is restored.

How to Prevent Emergencies

Most garage door emergencies are preventable with regular maintenance. An annual service catches worn springs, fraying cables, and motor issues before they become failures. Our 12-point inspection covers every component and includes lubrication, tension adjustment, and safety testing.
